3 Critical Toy Safety Rules For El Cajon Parents

San Diego childrens vitamins

Between holidays and birthdays, there are plenty of opportunities for gift giving in the San Diego area, so parents are often on the lookout for toys to give at the next big event. Toys can promote children’s health by stimulating the mind, encouraging imagination, or by getting kids moving around and exercising. But whatever toy you choose, make sure it is safe.

Next time you are browsing the toy aisle of your favorite Bonita, Lemon Grove, or La Mesa department store, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind.

1. Be sure that you purchase toys that suit the child’s age and abilities. Buying a toy that is meant for older children is a possible safety hazard and should always be avoided.

2. Once you’ve chosen an age-appropriate toy, read all of the enclosed instructions before allowing your kids to play with it.

3. This can be difficult when you have children of differing ages, but you should always make sure that older kids play with toys containing small parts away from younger children, and never allow them to leave the game pieces unattended.

And, speaking of gifts, remember that ribbons and strings should be taken away immediately after a gift or toy is unwrapped.

My name is Derrick Winkel and I am passionate about kids health in Bonita. I want to help parents in and around San Diego to raise healthy children and I do this by discussing important issues in my Children’s Health Blog, such as proper nutrition, immunization schedules, and safety.

I own a home based business here in El Cajon that sells Xocai Protein Bar. If you would like to learn more, call me at 801.437.5984 or visit me on the web at http://derrickwinkel.com/contact-us/.

Music is Magic for El Cajon Kids

Bonita immunization schedule

Parents in and around El Cajon know that healthy kids need proper nutrition, lots of exercise, and well-rounded lives. It’s also safe to say that for all children, a well-rounded life should include music in one form or another.

Studies have shown that music does so much more than simply entertain!

Did you know that children who are involved in some kind of musical training during school perform better in math and science? They also develop better coordination, do better in reading, concentrating, and goal setting. Studies show that students who are involved in a music education program also perform better on their SATs, and are more likely to attend college.

While it’s ideal for La Mesa, Lemon Grove, and Bonita parents to start their kids young, it is never too late to learn a musical instrument. Music stores in the San Diego area will have great advice on age-appropriate music lessons and teachers for your curious child.

But lessons aren’t the only way! Keep an eye out in the El Cajon community for musical events such as church, school, and community performance programs. Check with La Mesa, Lemon Grove, and Bonita libraries, websites, and community centers for more information.

Keep up the good work, El Cajon parents! Your children are lucky to have you to help them stay safe, healthy, and happy!

3 Tips For Improving El Cajon Kids’ Attention Spans

Bonita immunization schedule

Hello California parents! Today in the El Cajon Children’s Health Blog, we are going to look at various ways to lengthen kids’ attention spans. An increased attention span can improve learning ability as well as behavior and is an important aspect of kids health in Bonita.

1. Find an activity that will hold their attention. This might mean that you need to experiment with different types of toys and crafts. One child might enjoy building blocks while another may become engrossed in an art project. There are many craft and hobby stores in the La Mesa, Lemon Grove, and Bonita area where parents can get great ideas.

2. Recorded stories are a wonderful resource for increasing attention spans. Have your child lie on the floor and close their eyes, then play a recorded story. When it’s finished, have your child retell the story to you. Local San Diego libraries are perfect for finding recorded books and stories. Or you can download audio books for your iPad or other electronic reader.

3. Make sure that your child is using age-appropriate toys, crafts, and media. Age recommendations can be very helpful when deciding what activities will effectively engage your child.

Remember that it’s natural for different children to have varying attention spans, but the attention span of all kids should improve with age.

I’m Derrick Winkel and I am passionate about helping California parents raise healthy and happy kids. I try to keep apprised on the latest in proper nutrition, childhood obesity, and immunizations. Preventing Teen Prescription Drug Abuse In La Mesa

Preventing Teen Prescription Drug Abuse In La Mesa

Hello, welcome to my La Mesa children’s health and nutrition blog. Today’s topic is teen prescription drug abuse.

Most La Mesa teens will be offered an illegal prescription medication at one time or another. They are sold at California high schools and passed out at teen ‘pharm’ parties. California parents should realize that no child is immune. Here are some tips for La Mesa parents from Better Medicine: 1

Start talking about the dangers when they’re preteens. Speak early, often, and clearly.
Stay involved in your child’s life.
Emphasize how misusing medication can destroy relationships and keep him or her from achieving goals, such as getting into a certain college or landing a future job.
Teach your child to say ‘no’ firmly but kindly, give a reason, then change the subject or leave the situation.
Monitor your child’s internet usage for signs of prescription drug involvement.1

La Mesa parents should keep their medications locked away. It is also important to realize that children watch how their mother and father use prescription medications. I encourage all San Diego parents to use prescription meds safely and legally.

Rethinking San Diego Schools

Rethinking San Diego Schools Welcome to today’s Healthy San Diego Children blog. This site is dedicated to promoting children’s health in the San Diego area.

Unless you have been living in a cave for the last 20 years, you have heard about the obesity epidemic among U.S. children.

There are many worthwhile programs in the San Diego community that promote healthy eating habits and increased exercise for our youngest residents. I came across an interesting article last week that focused on how the design of schools can affect children’s health in general and obesity rates in particular.

‘Many schools were planned without thought given to how students can safely walk or ride their bikes to school. Playgrounds have been cut from budgets. An overemphasis on competitive sports has created a disproportionate amount of funding going to a select group of high profile sports, while minimizing the opportunities for the majority of students who desperately need exercise.’ Joel K. Sims, AIA, “Designing Schools To Fight Childhood Obesity,” School Designer, May 2007, http://www.schooldesigner.com/Articles/Designing-Schools-to-Fight-Childhood-Obesity-Part-1.asp, accessed on May 16, 2011

Here are some suggestions for making schools fitness-friendly:

  • Incorporate features of professional health clubs
  • Partner with community fitness centers to create multi-use facilities
  • Combine electronic entertainment and exercise
  • Incorporate movement into lesson plans

As we plan for new and renovated San Diego schools, let’s take our children’s fitness into consideration. As San Diego parents and educators, we can also promote lesson plans that incorporate movement. I also believe we need to look at how our tax dollars are spent. Do competitive sports programs in California receive more than their fair share of available funds? Could we better use this money to provide exercise opportunities for all San Diego children?

I encourage you to raise awareness of these issues in your California city. The only thing that will spur change is if parents, educators, and government leaders work together to lower the obesity rates in our California communities.

El Cajon Kids and Bug Bite Dangers

El Cajon Kids and Bug Bite Dangers Healthy El Cajon kids love to play outdoors, but California parents need to be aware of a potential danger: bug bites. The ability to tell a harmful bug bite from a benign one is essential to keeping your active El Cajon child safe.

Flea bites are common in Bonita, Lemon Grove, and La Mesa. They appear as a rash on a child’s skin with individual raised spots that might have a puncture in the center. El Cajon children will usually complain of itchy skin if they have been bitten by fleas.

Bee and wasp stings, also common in the San Diego area, can be differentiated by the number of stings. Bees only sting once, lose their stinger and then die, whereas wasps (as well as hornets and yellow jackets) can sting multiple times. California homes often harbor wasp nests under the eaves.

The sting of a fire ant will usually cause San Diego kids to have a red hive that may develop into a itchy, pus-filled lesion. Chiggers, which are tiny arachnids, cause multiple itchy red welts on kids’ skin. Check your local El Cajon drugstore for itch-relief products and watch the welts for signs of infection.

Ticks bites will cause an uncomfortable redness on your San Diego child’s skin and may even swell. Since ticks can carry harmful diseases, you should contact your El Cajon area pediatrician if you child has had a tick bite.

San Diego Kid’s Health: What Is ‘Failure To Thrive?’

San Diego Kid's Health: What Is 'Failure To Thrive?'

Though San Diego children come in all shapes and sizes and grow at widely varying rates, sometimes an extremely low weight indicates a medical condition called ‘failure to thrive.’

This general term is used for children who weigh significantly less than other healthy San Diego kids their age.

According to Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, in cases of children with failure to thrive the rate of weight and height gain ‘may be more important than actual measurements.’ 1

San Diego children in the ‘failure to thrive’ category weigh lower than the 3rd percentile. In addition, their weight is significantly lower than what is considered healthy for their height.

In addition, San Diego kids with failure to thrive usually have delayed development in physical, social, and emotional skills.

In California, failure to thrive can be caused by numerous factors, both physically and environmentally. San Diego parents who are concerned about their child’s development should consult their pediatrician, even if no specific medical symptoms are detected.

4 Things Your El Cajon Pediatrician Wants You To Know

Bonita Kids Vitamins

The health of their children is a top priority for parents in the Bonita, Lemon Grove, and La Mesa areas, and that’s why having a good relationship with your child’s pediatrician is important. From well-child check-ups to children’s immunizations to flu shots, these healthcare providers are there when parents need them.

Today in the El Cajon Children’s Health Blog, we want to give you a look into some of the issues facing pediatricians, especially those issues that they may have difficulty discussing with parents.

1. A cold is a cold is a cold, even if they call it something different. There are lots of names for the common cold, like “viral rhinosinusitis” or “purulent rhinitis”. They might sound fancy, but if your kids has it, it really just means they have a cold. Many pediatricians use these terms so parents don’t feel like their being sent away from the office with an overly-simple diagnosis.

2. Old wives’ tales and internet health sites are no substitutes for professional medical advice! There are many rumors that have no scientific basis, but some patients insist on bringing their child in because an older member of the family noticed something (think green snot or ear tugging). Also, while the internet is filled with great information, it is also teeming with sensationalized and nonscientific sites that can be downright dangerous. Pediatricians just want parents to be safe and well-informed when choosing how to treat their child.

3. Fevers are scary, but for children over 3 months old, there is no magic number where a fever becomes dangerous. However, accompanying symptoms like lethargy, rash, or inconsolable crying are cause for concern.

4. Scheduling is not an exact science.
No one likes to camp out in the waiting room, but, once in a while, a patient requires a little extra care, and this can throw the schedule off for the day. However, one day that patient may be your child, and you’ll want that schedule-ruining extra care as well.

My name is Derrick Winkel and I want to help San Diego families to raise healthy, happy kids. Issues such as proper nutrition for children and childhood obesity are often on my mind. I am the owner of a direct sales San Diego area home business that sells Xocai Protein Bar.

Is My California Baby Ready For Solids?

Is My California Baby Ready For Solids?

Although Bonita pediatricians generally recommend starting infants on solid foods when they are around six months of age, there are important developmental milestones that must be reached before your baby can take this step.

Even if an infant’s digestive system is ready for solid food, the baby must be able to safely swallow it. A baby should be able to sit with assistance but hold his or head up on their own. Without head and neck control, eating solids is difficult and dangerous. Many Bonita pediatricians also advise parents to wait until an infant shows interest in what other family members are eating.

If you are unsure if your infant is ready for solid food, check with your Bonita pediatrician. Remember that for the first year your baby’s nutrition will still come primarily from breast milk or formula.

My name is Derrick Winkel. I am an advocate for children’s health and nutrition in Bonita. I also sell Xocai Powerhouse Cookie, a nutritional powerhouse. For more information on Xocai Powerhouse Cookie, call me today at 801.437.5984.
